Falkner opened Citizen Cake in San Francisco's Mission District in 1997, moved the restaurant and patisserie to 399 Grove Street in Hayes Valley in 2000, and relocated again to 2125 Fillmore Street in Pacific Heights in 2010. According to the New Fillmore, which published an article on 2011-12-09 about the restaurant closing, Citizen Cake shut its doors just before Christmas that year, after struggling to build a following at the Fillmore Street location. SFGate had earlier reported that Falkner was departing Citizen Cake for New York, a move that preceded the closure. No source describes Citizen Cake reopening under Falkner or new ownership after 2011.
