Bayou on the Vine was a Cajun and Creole restaurant in Kansas City's historic 18th and Vine jazz district, purchased by married couple Chuck and Eartha for their daughter Sharekka, an aspiring executive chef, with two more daughters, Shayna and Cimina, also helping manage the business. When Gordon Ramsay's crew visited in November 2018, none of the sisters had significant restaurant experience, tension among them was straining the wider family, and, as the episode showed, Chuck and Eartha's marriage was under stress from the business's finances. Ramsay, dining in disguise as a former baseball player, found cold hush puppies, poorly seasoned jambalaya, and overcooked catfish after a long wait. Hidden-camera footage shown to the staff documented an overflowing grease trap, a dirty kitchen, and Sharekka's difficulty managing her team; staff told Ramsay that, family ties aside, her performance would have already cost her the job elsewhere.

For the relaunch, Ramsay introduced a new Creole-inspired menu and reworked the dining room around a jazz theme honoring Eartha's father and uncle, both of whom had performed live music at the restaurant years earlier; as part of that tribute, Ramsay renamed the business Gadson's for the relaunch and arranged a surprise appearance by Eartha's uncle, a former jazz musician.
