Sushi Ko was a Japanese restaurant that chef Akira Hatae opened in Thousand Oaks, California, naming it after the well-known Bel Air restaurant where he had worked his way up over roughly 25 years before starting his own place with his wife Lisa, according to Mashed's 2023 account of the episode. By the time of Gordon Ramsay's 2009 visit, the restaurant and the couple's marriage were both under severe strain: Lisa was openly frustrated with Akira, and their adult children, Hana and Sammy, described the toll the business's decline had taken on the family. Recap sources describe Ramsay being served a cold, over-salted miso soup, a green tower salad containing a hair, frozen and chewy salmon sashimi, and a "sushi pizza," a mix of salmon, crab, cheese, and mayonnaise over sushi rice, so unpalatable that Ramsay called it "an insult to Japanese culture" and spit it out. A kitchen inspection turned up staff working without hairnets, a broken refrigerator and fryer, and mayonnaise stored at room temperature.
