What happened after Kitchen Nightmares?
Chef John "Chappy" Chapman opened Chappy's on Church in downtown Nashville after his home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, bringing New Orleans-style Creole cooking to a city he later admitted, according to a former employee interviewed by Nashville's WTVF (NewsChannel 5), he never much liked. By the time Ramsay's crew filmed in 2013, the restaurant in the heart of Nashville was struggling for business, and Chapman blamed local diners for failing to understand Cajun cuisine rather than examining his own operation. Ramsay initially found Chapman willing to make the changes the show recommended, and the relaunch appeared to go smoothly on camera.
The improvement did not last. According to the Christian Post (2013-06-20), Chapman soon reverted to his previous approach, and business fell again. Chapman announced the restaurant's closure on Facebook on June 18, 2013, about a month after the episode aired, writing that Kitchen Nightmares was to blame and that "we shouldn't have done" the show. The Christian Post's report on the closure noted that a local television investigation by WSMV found a different explanation: a sign posted on the restaurant's door stated that the building had been seized for non-payment of Tennessee state taxes. NewsChannel 5 (WTVF) later reported that dozens of former employees were still owed wages five years after the abrupt closure, with no indication that Chapman would return to settle the debts.
Chapman went on to open Chappy's Bistro inside Nashville's Almanett Hotel in November 2013, but that venture closed within a year, in October 2014. He and his wife, Starr, relocated to Mississippi by 2016 and, as of reporting gathered by entertainment outlets in 2023, operate two restaurants between Mississippi and Alabama. The original Church Street building in Nashville sat vacant for years after Chappy's closed before it was demolished in January 2019, WTVF reported, leaving an empty lot at the site that remained undeveloped as of a 2022 check of the property.
