What happened after Restaurant Takeover?
Portugril, at 1733 Eglinton Avenue East in Toronto, was the thirteenth and final episode of Restaurant Takeover (Food Network Canada) season two, aired on 2013-11-20. According to TVmaze's episode page, owner Joe had learned Portuguese churrasco cooking from his mother and grandmother and saw it as his duty to carry the tradition on in Canada. Portugril was his pride and joy, and his daughter Maria, who managed the restaurant, put her own savings toward the overhaul it needed. Chef Corbin Tomaszeski and designer Paula Velez were sent in to rescue the restaurant, with the family's legacy and finances in the balance.
The pages read do not spell out what the makeover changed. TV Foodies, a fan directory of TV-featured restaurants, lists Churrasco Portugril at 1733 Eglinton Avenue East as featured on the show; its page, published on 2014-08-03, says the restaurant was styled after the old taverns of Portugal that served sandwiches and the grill houses that served churrasco chicken, and it gives a website address and a Facebook page. The page prints the tagline A Little Taste of Portugal. Neither the TVmaze page nor the TV Foodies page says which parts of the room or the menu came from the show.
In June 2022, blogTO published the restaurant's closing announcement. According to blogTO, Churrasco Portugril had been at 1733 Eglinton Avenue East for around 15 years, and its last day of service was June 26. In the announcement the owner thanked customers for their support through the Metrolinx and Crosslinx construction and through the pandemic. A Google Maps listing for Churrasco Portugril at the same address, checked on 2026-10-19, also marks the business as permanently closed, which makes it a second source for the closing. The pages read for this entry do not say whether another business now occupies the space.
