Is The White Hart Hotel Still Open? The Hotel Inspector Update

The White Hart Hotel, at 23-25 Holywell Hill in St Albans, Hertfordshire, was featured in the seventh episode of series 9 of The Hotel Inspector (Channel 5), first aired on 2012-08-16. Wikipedia's episode list, read on 2026-10-19, titles it "The White Hart Hotel + inn" and describes a 15th-century hotel with a reputation for hauntings that, it says, catches guests by surprise. The list does not describe the changes made after the visit.

The St Albans history site stalbanshistory.org published an article in 2019 tracing the inn from the late 1600s to the 1870s. It says the White Hart was the largest inn in town in the 1750s, with beds for 26 guests and stabling for 50 horses, and that a new turnpike road in the mid-1790s bypassed Holywell Hill. It adds that the inn stopped taking guests for about eighteen months from 1840 and reopened in 1843, and that it was trading when the article was written.

The hotel's own website, read on 2026-10-19, gives the address as 23-25 Holywell Hill, St Albans, AL1 1EZ, with page metadata showing it was first published on 2025-06-12 and last modified on 2026-08-05. It describes a building of more than 600 years near St Albans Cathedral and lists its restaurant, Tudors, as open Monday and Tuesday 12 to 2:30 pm and 6 to 9 pm, Wednesday to Saturday 12 to 9 pm and Sunday 12 to 4:30 pm, with the bar opening daily at 11 am. Pages for rooms, functions, weddings, Christmas and what's on are linked. The site names no owners and does not mention the television series. Google Places lists The White Hart at the same address as operational on 2026-10-19.
