What happened after Restaurant Makeover?

The Grapefruit Moon was a diner at 968 Bathurst Street in The Annex, Toronto. An entry dated 2005-03-11 in the Serial Diners dining-club agenda lists it at that address, a few blocks north of Bathurst Station and halfway between Bloor and Dupont, about five weeks before the episode aired; that entry does not mention the show or the owner. The episode, S1E3, aired 2005-04-19. Google Play's description says a single mother ran the diner, that the place was in need of a rebuild, and that the team had to redo both its look and its menu. Rotten Tomatoes' listing is shorter and says a woman gave her diner a makeover. RealityTVWorld's show page credits chef Rene Chauvin and designer Meredith Heron.

The format gave each chef and designer team very little money and time, with the owner's funds matched up to $20,000 (Wikipedia's Restaurant Makeover article and RealityTVWorld; the match was later reduced to $15,000). The listings we read do not itemize what was changed in this episode, so all we can say, from Google Play, is that the look and the menu were both part of the work. We found no account of staff changes, a new name or the relaunch itself, and no coverage of how the diner's regulars responded.

Toronto Life reported on 2025-08-20 that Daisy May's, a diner run by owner Theo Laan, occupies the former Grapefruit Moon space at 968 Bathurst. The article does not discuss the Grapefruit Moon itself or the television episode, and it describes how Laan came to take over the space after another restaurateur stepped away from a planned project there. A public Google Places listing for The Grapefruit Moon, checked on 2026-10-19, is marked permanently closed and gives the same Bathurst Street address. Daisy May's is a separate business from the Grapefruit Moon, not a rename of it.
